James B Cook was born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire on August 22, 1888, one of three children of Marion Cook and James Cook, a spool dyer. Cook, a thread winder and then a clerk, attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1914 to 1917 and 1918 to 1920 as an evening student of drawing and painting (1914-15, 1916-17), life drawing (1915-16) and modelling (1918-20). Cook is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour and according to this he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. according to the "Dictionary of Scottish Art and Architecture", Cook was a landscape and coastal artist in oil and watercolour. he exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1919 to 1946.
